Medicare rebates (Better Access): how to get started
To access Medicare-rebated psychology sessions, you’ll usually need to visit your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a referral to a psychologist. Bring your Medicare card and allow enough time for a longer appointment. Once you have your referral, contact our Point Cook psychology team to book your first session. Eligible clients can access up to 10 Medicare-rebated individual sessions per calendar year (1 Jan–31 Dec).

Step 1 — Check you’re eligible for Medicare rebates

To claim Medicare rebates for psychology (Better Access), the client generally needs to be eligible for Medicare and have a mental health condition that a doctor assesses as meeting the Better Access requirements (for example, anxiety, depression, trauma-related concerns, etc.). (The GP/doctor determines eligibility.)

Step 2 — Book a GP appointment in Point Cook for a Mental Health Treatment Plan

To access Medicare rebates, the client typically needs:

  • GP assessment, and
  • Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), and
  • referral letter addressed to a psychologist/your clinic.

What to bring/prepare for the GP visit

  • Medicare card (and any concession card, if relevant)
  • A quick summary of symptoms (how long, how often, impacts on sleep/work/relationships)
  • Current medications and relevant medical history

Step 3 — Ask the GP for a referral for “mental health treatment services”

The referral should usually include:

  • Client details (name/DOB/address)
  • Reason for referral/presenting concerns and any diagnosis
  • Whether it’s for individual sessions
  • The number of sessions being referred for (commonly 6 initially, then a review)

Step 4 — Book with the psychologist and bring the referral

Clients should bring (or email) the referral and treatment plan details before or at the first session so your practice can:

  • Confirm the referral is valid for Medicare claiming, and
  • Process Medicare rebates correctly.

Step 5 — Reviews and session numbers (Better Access)

Under Better Access, eligible patients can access up to 10 individual Medicare-rebated psychology sessions per calendar year (1 Jan–31 Dec) (and up to 10 group sessions, if relevant). A review with the referring doctor is usually required part-way through to access additional sessions.

Important (recent change): MyMedicare / “usual GP” continuity rule

From 1 November 2025, Better Access items are linked to continuity of care rules—Mental Health Treatment Plans/referrals are generally expected to be done by:

  • the patient’s MyMedicare-registered practice, or
  • the patient’s usual medical practitioner.
This can affect which GP a person should see for their plan/referral.
